MURAL CONCEPTS – Solo Exhibition by Jon Ismailovski

FRIDAY 31 MAY 10am – 12pm

On both of these occasions Jon will discuss his art practice followed by a discussion and question and answer session. Refreshments ALL WELCOME. Gold Coin Donation.

“I am an artist with a strong focus on illustration and character design. My style is heavily influenced by the cartoons of the 1940′s and contemporary cartoonists. The composition of my pieces could best be described as ‘organised chaos’ as I tend to mix many elements into one coherent piece, often built over an underlying image or shape.

“My favourite medium is ink and paper, either as standalones or as a base for a digital finish. I am slowly moving towards more traditional mediums such as paint and watercolours however I always feel most comfortable with a simple pen or pencil in hand.”

Eddystone Mural Overview:

The Eddystone Mural was inspired by artwork created by a class of year fives at Eddystone Primary School. We listed forty or so animals on the board, wrote them down on paper and then put them all into the hat. Each kid then proceeded to draw two animals from the hat at random which they then used to splice together into their own animal. The creations ranged from meercat-scorpions to wold-turtles to unicorn-dolphins. I then re-interpreted the children’s drawings into my own style and used them to create the mural.

This is a great exhibition – not to be missed – a GREAT EXPERIENCE FOR CHILDREN

Brief Moments of Sanity
15-28 September 2013
Official opening: 2pm Sun 15 Sep

Brief Moments of Sanity features two artists (Renata Wright and Harry Davies) painting about similar big themes: life; love; conflict; sex; morning tea; bereavement; aspirations; afternoon tea; and religion.

As part of the exhibition the artists experimented to see just how much their artworks would differ if they painted from the same source material. To this end they chose a song — one song (that they both liked, and had a bit of meaning for them) and then they both produced a painting inspired by the song. To further the experiment they approached several musicians to come up with one piece of music (each) based on the two paintings. The music and paintings will be revealed at the exhibition, making this exhibition a little bit different to others.

Renata Wright is an Australian born artist with an individual style developed over years of experimenting with different art media. She uses watercolours or acrylics depending on her subject and mood at the time, although watercolour is her first love. Renata focuses on colour, contrast, and most importantly – emotion – in her paintings, to encourage the viewer to stop for a moment and reflect on similar emotions in their own life.

For this exhibition Renata has put together a group of abstract and semi-abstract contemporary watercolour paintings, none of which resemble traditional watercolour art but all of which have their own personal meaning and interpretation of emotions that many of us experience in life.

Harry Davies draws and paints stuff, and occasionally he lets other people look at it (the artwork that is). Whilst being overlooked by all the major art institutions Harry’s paintings are avidly collected by a loyal fan-base in the north of England (sorry, that should read by a loyal fan, based in the north of England… and we’re not altogether sure about the quality of her eyesight). Harry’s style of painting is most commonly described as: unique; challenging; borderline poor; wtf?; developing; better from a distance. The most frequently asked question that gets put to him is: ‘Just what is going on inside your head?’ Which is where the idea for this exhibition came from.

Infinite Dreams is a body of work that consists of original, abstract, (sometimes textural), mixed media paintings.

Will Huntley (1968, Colfax, Washington, United States) creates mixed media artworks and sculptures.

“Unlike many other painters, I have a background in realistic, figurative sculpture, film creature special effects, and industrial design. Even though I teach drawing and sculpture, I did not try my hand at painting, seriously, until late last year.

“With the method I have chosen, there is certain design and sculptural aspects to it that separates my works from my contemporaries. Each piece is finished with a hard, durable, and sometimes textural, finish. This allows the owner, the luxury of actually being able to “touch” each piece. Being a very tactile person I always found it very frustrating that I wasn’t allowed to touch artworks in the museums and galleries. So I set out to create a body of work that you could not only put your hands on but you were encouraged to do so.”

Will Huntley currently works for Kirkside Products, The West Australian Academy for Performing Arts and lives, with his wife and two boys, in Perth, Western Australia.

We are all familiar with the “Totem” which is often used to define family groups, belief systems and identities throughout the world in both historical and contemporary context. Eleven WA sculptors have created a thought provoking, walk through experience featuring a diversity of totems aligned to their own personal concepts and materials of choice.

Exhibits include work created in cement, ceramics, steel, wood, recycled material, industrial discards, found objects, textiles, polystyrene and fibre glass in a variety of sizes. The exhibition runs from Friday 5th April until Friday 19th April.

Exhibitors include Lesley Barrett, Nic Compton, William Dennis, Matthew Dwyer, Josephine Franco, Albie Herbert, Sigrid Rance, Nadia Rasheed, Maris Raudzins, Amanda White and Val Shaw. Also, African Totems created by the Shona Tribe of Zimbabwe and two large wooden totems created by the Warwick Carvers Group on loan from the City of Joondalup permanent collection will be on display.

“The core of my current work is concerned with expanding the boundaries of Architecture, the art sphere I’m immersed in daily. Although based in the architectural tradition of space, functionality, views as well as spacial form, my exploration of the photography just as in a painting language can lead at times to working with same view, 3d object or subject at different times. Processes of photography just as architecture can exist in revelations of everyday objects, building envelopes, installations, performance and events. I’m experimenting with sourcing inspiration for composition and style from painting or architectural styles.

I am interested in the capabilities of photography, from a colour photo to a desatured, partial black & white images. The layers, physical and illusional, the way reflections and depth of field can be solidified and frozen in time or views framed. My subjects range from, buildings that I worked on as an Architect to nature, patterns, abstract forms to spaces between buildings that take on a function and feeling of their own. Some photos take root in the everyday subject that many move away from, layers of complex shapes creating a sense of visual, and physical depth.”

The exhibition will run from the 26st of February to the 1st of March.

Gallery times: 10am to 2pm Tuesdays to Fridays.

Exhibition: 18 – 24 February 2013

Opening Night: 18 February at 7pm

This exhibition is all about the female.
I had envisaged a woman in my mind that I wanted to portray in my works; a woman who boasts power and sass and encompasses an intriguing energy.

I wanted to explore different styles and build that vigour in my pieces that would leave the subject bold and enchanting.

My first series of works was the ‘Cheeky Children’ series. These pieces I created were more of a study of portraiture and an exploration of detail in the lead up to my ‘Vogue’ series. I used simple colours and exaggerated expressions to evoke a happiness and portray the innocence of the subject. I think the viewer can really connect to this series and find the characters created in each piece recognisable in some way.

The second series I created was the ‘Vogue’ series.
This series is all about the confrontation of a strong woman. The subject in all these works is staring straight at the viewer and maintains a compelling pose that almost intimidates the viewer. I used splashes of bold colours in these works to add that striking element to compliment the expression of the woman. These works are by far my most contemporary and touch on a pop art style in particular pieces.

The third series I began stemmed from a long interest in portraying the female figure. ‘Effeminate’ aims at exploring the peacefulness and beauty of a woman’s form even in its most vulnerable state. I used deep colours to encourage mood and a solitary environment in each painting. These works show the quiet strength of the woman and the sole power of the female figure in even an empty space. I felt most connected to this series.

My most recent series is the ‘Up for Air’ series. These works evoke a fun and vivacious style using bright colours and bold detail. I most enjoyed creating this series and experimenting with the illusions of light and the waters reflections on the figure. While my most challenging, these pieces pushed me to explore different themes and various styles of the ‘woman’ in a contrasting theme. I think the element of water still encourages a calm atmosphere, and, while such bright hues have been used, still evokes a harmonious scene for the viewer to observe.

My use of the masculine article ‘Le’ when referring to a female noun shows the quiet strength of the woman portrayed in these works, and matches the overall theme of this exhibition.

“Art is Creating a Silence”

Art is about how to design your silence.

Exhibition times: Monday 11th – Friday 15th February,

The gallery will be open Monday – Friday 10 am – 4 .30 pm

Wednesday 13th Feb 6.30 pm and Friday 15th February 10am Jane will be giving an introduction to her exhibition and related thought processes.

Gold coin donation. All welcome!

A look at the process of an art idea and the final result.

Using Facebook, I began working on an art idea that would incorporate “friends”, visuals and writing in the interpretation of “Life is a Performance”.

My audience would comprise the first twenty “friends” to sign up.

Having established this audience, twenty photographs, chosen at random from photo albums put together throughout my life, were posted on Facebook, two every fortnight for ten weeks. The audience could comment on them if they so wished. It was on the whole a silent audience.

Looking at these photographs every week, I began to see that they all in one way or another had “theatrical scenery and backdrops” (actual scenes, landscapes, and paintings, weavings, decorations in peoples homes) and “actors” (people and animals).

Because there seemed to be no “props” in the photographs, I decided to collect found objects during the ten weeks. I also noted items and incidents of interest to me during the same ten week period; photographs, news items, quotes that I enjoyed, sounds and happenings around me.

At the end of the ten weeks I informed my friends-audience that I was closing my Facebook page and that they had been part of the early stages of an artwork to be finalized early in 2013. They were to be informed of future developments.

I had not considered the future of the project at this stage. It seemed to me now that the obvious way to go from here would be to create a performance piece. For example, the visitors to the gallery could become the audience. Some of the Facebook audience, who lived in countries around the world, seemed to be dancers, musicians and painters among other things. Perhaps they could come to the event and be the performers. If not, then the visitors to the gallery could be the audience and sit on chairs in the gallery, surrounded by the found object props. The chairs could be name-tagged with the Facebook audience’s names. They could listen to continuous playing sounds I had heard and watch slideshows of the original twenty photographs. A hundred different ideas came to mind, and were tossed out one by one.

It all seemed too contrived. I was stuck. I wanted something simpler.

I went to India with a tour group for twenty days. I asked a member of the group to take twenty Indian photographs for me to get some new ideas flowing. Also we started to collect some more found objects and noted what was going on around us. This still didn’t lead to any clear idea of what to do next.

However, once I got home I realized exactly what had to be done. Everything that had happened to date was a process, a big, bustling activity to be pasted on a wall somewhere for everyone to look at and follow through from beginning to end. So the final presentation would be mostly an exhibition of this process, the visual activity, written material, quotes, letters, news clips; a wall of everything that had come before.

To complete the work it was necessary that the noise of the coming together of all this activity be contrasted with a stillness; a quietness, a silence. The found objects were taken aside and two small sculptures built to be exhibited in a quiet, empty, separate space, the final product of eight months’ work.

The blend(er) Gallery take pleasure in inviting you and your friends to the viewing and sale of the collaboration of recent works by artists, Cat Cronin and Jen Lee. The exhibition titled “Burst” exemplifies the genesis of inspiration and creativity, and the artists’ recent emergence to the City of Joondalup’s art community.

Opening: Friday 8 February at 7pm

Exhibition: Monday 4th February to Saturday 9th February

Jen Lee

Western Australian artist Jen Lee creates inspiring, abstract contemporary artwork in rich, earthy tones.

As a working mother with two beautiful daughters, Jen draws on reality and emotion to breathe life into her work, creating vibrant scenes with a myriad of textures.

Jen specialises in commissioned pieces, personally created to your requirements and to match your décor colours.

Whilst most of her work is sold directly from the studio, her artistic flair is increasingly sought after by Interior Decorators, Design Consultants and home owners looking to find spectacular pieces of art to compliment their home or office.

Jen loved art from an early age and dabbled on and off over the years. But somehow, she always found herself being drawn back to the canvas and is now enjoying the opportunity to concentrate on painting as an integral part of her life and career. Her abstract artwork is self-taught, although Jen’s formal training in Graphic Design does play an important role.

Jen creates canvasses with a strong, dramatic flair, whilst exploring the lure and intrigue of bringing together different mediums. Her pleasure in exploring how these mediums react to one another is evident in her finished work.

I love the journey of experimentation and unpredictable change, and watch with intrigue at how different mediums react with one another. Painting is my passion and provides a private time for me to connect with my soul. Each piece of artwork is intuitively created with inspiration from the wonderful colours and textures I see on a day to day basis. The natural beauty of our sensational landscape in Western Australia is also a continual inspiration to me. — Jen Lee

Cat Cronin

Cat Cronin Irish born Artist, living and working in Western Australia creates energetic, innovative, contemporary artworks, pulling on the expression of raw emotion caught in the split second actions and reactions of the world around her.

In this exhibition “Burst” Cat has pooled her formal training in design, fabrication and animation to create three dimensional figurative wall hangings.

By drawing on the emotion expressed and experienced in every day life and capturing it in the folds, creases and gestures of her art works. She reflects on the beauty of both the up and down turned lips, of one of the most interesting pieces of living breathing art – Human kind.

My passion is utilising the energy I find in the beauty around me, and unleashing it into my art as a means of connection and communication. I am currently exploring the split second reaction, as the most “in the moment” that anyone is lucky enough to ever live…..

To loose yourself -only to find yourself momentarily….. — Cat Cronin

The JCAA Board join me in thanking you all for your support and patience over this past year. It has been a year of transition and your support has been paramount to our success. Our members are our foundation and we hope you will continue to support us in 2013.

“CHRISTMAS EXTRAVAGANZA”
The “Christmas Extravaganza” continues until Friday 21st December. Please continue to encourage friends and interested parties to visit. The moving of the night markets has unfortunately affected sales and we have made the City aware of this. We are also putting in place a further initiative for Wednesday 12th. We are inviting “the City of Joondalup” and “Bank managers and employees” to visit the gallery next Wednesday between 10.30 and 2 pm to see the exhibition and have some light refreshments, to try and initiate more interest. Details and collection of artworks is from 12 noon – 4 pm on Friday 21st December.
————————————————————————————————————————-

JANUARY 2013

22nd January – 1st February: “Lines and Spaces” – Pauline Sookloll, winner of the 2012 “Art In Focus Award”. A City of Joondalup Initiative.

Friday 1st February – First Members Friday end of month tea and talk by artist Pauline Sookloll.
————————————————————————————————————————–

2012 IN A NUTSHELL

Some interesting statistics:
During the year we held: 1 team building exercise, 12 end of month tea and talks, 18 initiatives introduced by the City to include workshops, exhibitions and artists talks, 93 Workshops and 20 JCAA initiated exhibitions. We had only 1 “empty” week.

JCAA BOARD
The addition of three new board members has brought a range of different skills and experience to the JCAA board. This should streamline and further enhance our ability to support our membership and continue to provide exciting exhibitions, workshops and talks.
My personal thanks go to our Chairman Bill Robinson, Shiela Ayling, Eva Boogaard, Hettie Rowley, Matthew Prouse, Lindsay Dullea, Prina Shah, Val Cave and Bill Dennis for their invaluable contributions in the running of the gallery.

CITY OF JOONDALUP
Our thanks go to Alex Mac Iver, Amanda Alderson and Nicole Warren for their continued support and interest in the gallery.
___________________________________________________________________________.
2013

We already have 16 exhibitions booked for 2013, to include our 3 members’ shows, and 5 from the city. The entire “Urban Couture” Exhibition, “Aperture and Lace” is being brought to the Gallery to include all the garments and models which are usually housed at Lakeside. This should bring a lot of focus and interest to the gallery.

WORKSHOPS
Renata Wright has already booked in for the entire year with her water colour classes starting on Saturday morning the 2nd of February and Tuesday evening the 5th of February.
Judy Rogers begins her painting classes on Thursday morning the 7th of February.
Figure drawing “sessions” have been initiated once a month by Hettie Rowley on a Monday evening and will continue in 2013, but booking is essential. Hettie will also continue classes in 2013 and information relating to these will be sent out early next year.

TOTEM
The “Community Totem” is starting to take shape with a few members creating very interesting small pieces. Many thanks for this and please keep engaging with this initiative.

COFFEE EVENINGS/ DISCUSSIONS:
We are hoping to start up an evening gathering once a month (everybody welcome / gold coin donation) to discuss and debate all things art related. If you have any ideas’ on the type of discussions that might interest you, or area’s you would like to know more about, please let us know your thoughts.

WISHING YOU ALL A VERY HAPPY, PEACEFUL AND HEALTHY CHRISTMAS AND A WONDERFUL 2013

Warm Regards

Brave Art at the Blend(er) Gallery

The City of Joondalup and West Coast Institute of Training have collaborated to present an exhibition of young people with disabilities artwork @ the Blender. The work includes West Coast Institute’s Gaining Access to Training and Employment (GATE) students work as well as other young artists with disabilities from within the community.

The exhibition is entitled Brave Art.

Brave Art is young people with different abilities sharing their vision and creativity with the wider community. Brave because against a sea of challenges, these young artists dare to express their identity and create without prejudice, judgment, self-consciousness or fear; with the gift of an open heart.

West Coast Institute students have written and illustrated an intriguing and unique story entitled ‘The End of Time’. It is a parable about the end of the world, as we know it, a science-fiction fantasy full of action heroes, monsters and explosions with a very important message for today’s world. It is a tale of a planet, a community of people at a cross roads in history; faced with the choice of either working together to create a better world, or descending into darkness and chaos.

A small amount of illustrated booklets of ‘The End of Time’ will be for sale (donation) at the opening. Funds collected will be donated to the Blend(er) gallery to facilitate future art workshops for people with disabilities.

Let these young artists and their battles dare us to dream of a ‘Brave New World’, and let their strength and courage inspire us to be brave enough to create it!

West Coast Institute of Training and the City of Joondalup are committed to working with young people with disabilities to build a stronger, more inclusive community.

Cheryl Fisher, youth worker on the Mobile Outreach Bus from the City of Joondalup has organised for other young artists with disabilities, within the community to also be exhibiting in Brave Art.

The gallery will be open extra hours for this exhibition from 2pm to 5pm Tuesday to Friday and there may be opportunity to meet some of the artists who will be helping to mind the gallery at these times.
